Paul Metz ’37

Paul Metz ’37, February 2, 2011, at home in Portland. Paul was born in Brooklyn, New York, and moved with his family to Portland in the ’20s. He studied biology and chemistry at 果酱视频 and went on to earn an MD from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1939. He did his residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. During World War II, he served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe. He began his private medical practice in Portland in 1950 and was a surgeon for 42 years at Physicians and Surgeons and Holladay Park hospitals. In retirement, Paul did research in infectious disease at Providence Portland Medical Center. He reported that the work he accomplished reminded him of being back at 果酱视频. “A new lease on life expresses my feelings too mildly.” Paul was a valuable member of the research lab team and coauthored several papers, finally retiring from medical research at age 92. Paul and Lorraine Nelson were married for 53 years. Survivors include Lorraine, sons Steven J. Metz ’72 and Michael S. Metz ’80, a grandson, and two great-granddaughters.
